Love Wins

ElainePalladinoPhotography_WeddingPortraits_041When I was a teacher and we had big news days, I would stop whatever lesson I had planned for the day, I’d turn on the television and let my students live history. Both the good and the bad. Together we would talk about what we were witnessing, what it meant to them and how it might shape their thoughts going forward. Today is one of those days I wish I was still in the classroom. Today, love wins.

A few years ago I wrote this about gay marriage… “to me the subject of gay marriage is one of a person’s right to live their lives as human beings. A person should have the choice to tackle the beautiful beast that is marriage with the person they deem worthy—-no matter their sex.” Marriage is a sacred union and a fundamental human right.
As Supreme Court Justice Anthony Kennedy so eloquently said, “No union is more profound than marriage, for it embodies the highest ideals of love, fidelity, devotion, sacrifice, and family. In forming a marital union, two people become something greater than once they were. As some of the petitioners in these cases demonstrate, marriage embodies a love that may endure even past death.

It would misunderstand these men and women to say they disrespect the idea of marriage. Their plea is that they do respect it, respect it so deeply that they seek to find its fulfillment for themselves.

Their hope is not to be condemned to live in loneliness, excluded from one of civilization’s oldest institutions. They ask for equal dignity in the eyes of the law.

The Constitution grants them that right.”

Congratulations to all the couples who are now equal in the eyes of the law.

Congratulations to us all who are living on the right side of history.

Love, e
