Today I faced one of my biggest fears.
For as long I as I can remember, I’ve been afraid of deep, dark water. Not that I’ll drown, mind you, just that…I don’t really know. The lake behind Mike’s grandparent’s house in New Hampshire is beautiful. Mike, his brother, sister and cousins have all swam the lake since they could walk. They swim from the beach to this set of rocks across the lake. That was my Everest this summer. And I did it today.
I decided it was now or never so I just went for it. Mike and his cousin, Matt, swam with me but I was in the race of my life (against a looming anxiety attack) and there was no way I was going to slow down. My in-laws patiently rowed beside me incase I needed to get out and their presence helped me push through.
It might seem insignificant or something that people do all the time. I mean little kids do this, but it’s a scary thing to face your fears.
Today was a good day.
(Edited to Add: Pop (Mike’s grandpa) has given every grandkid who swims the lake $10. Since I’m a part of the family, I just got my 10 bucks. Awesome.)
