Memorial Day

Mike and I have spent the morning watching the final episodes of The Pacific. The ones we’ve missed. The ones I couldn’t wait to see. The ones you need to watch because this mini-series is unlike anything I’ve ever seen. It’s fitting, really. Today’s a day where we honor those who served to protect our freedom. Today we honor those who are still serving. The Pioneer Woman, a blog that I love to follow, has been posting “coming home” pictures of soldiers making their way back home, one way or another. They are lovely, heartbreaking, breathtaking. Take a look for yourself: Group 1, 2, 3, 4, 5.

Today I remember my friend Jim Fragos. I met him when I worked as a assistant sports information director at The University of Miami. He was the #1 UM fans who went to every single tennis and volleyball match. He was an amazing man and friend. I loved talking to him during matches and hearing his stories about when he was a young man. He told me how he lied about his age so he could enlist in the Navy during World War II. He told me the stories of all his Navy buddies and how he still kept up with them. I nagged him until he brought me a picture in his Navy uniform. Big Jim died in September and I felt the world grow a little dimmer that day. I I can still hear his voice of excitement whenever I called him with good news or filled him on what was going on in my life. could just imagine how happy he would be to see my pictures. My life is all the more blessed because Jim was in it.

Here’s to you big Jim.

Love, e

The brave die never, though they sleep in dust:
Their courage nerves a thousand living men.
