Yesterday I took a mental health day. I have all this work to do, but instead of marching right to my computer after I got home from school, I unloaded the cold groceries, left everything else in their bags, and vegged for the rest of the night. I didn’t even make dinner. After watching a completely cheesy chick flick, I switched to HBO where an episode of The Pacific had just started. I ended up watching four hours of the miniseries. And, boy, is it awesome.

From the same creators of the World War II miniseries, Band of Brothers, The Pacific tells the story of the war against Japan. It follows three main characters, Robert Leckie (my favorite), Eugene Sledge and John Basilone, through the battles on Guadalcanal, Peleliu, Okinawa, Cape Gloucester and, briefly, Iwo Jima. It’s a harrowing account of war humanity. I was immediately hooked.
Mike loves to read books on history, especially World War II. I have also always been fascinated by “The Greatest Generation” and ended up inhaling Tom Brokaw’s books of the same name when they came out. So, when I first saw the trailer for the series, I even marked it in my calendar. I mean, we were pumped. Life takes over, however, and it hardly finds room for a television show. I’m so happy that I was finally able to see it. There are still four more episodes (Sunday @ 9:00). I highly recommend catching up on the episodes that have already aired and not missing what is left. The opening sequence alone is enough to watch the show. It’s brilliant.
If you don’t believe me, see what the LA Times has to say HERE and the NY Times HERE.
If you like war movies, human stories and beautiful crafted films, you don’t want to miss this.
Love, e
